A person stands on a bright dance floor in the middle of a large room. They raise one arm upward. Around them, numerous audience members sit on the floor watching the scene. In the foreground, two people are seated; one operates technical equipment while the other speaks into a microphone.
Two people are on a bright floor surface in a large, slightly worn-looking room. They sit in front of a small mixing console and appear to be discussing it.
Many people kneel or squat close together on a white floor surface in a dark performance space. They write on notes and posters spread out on the floor. To the left, there is a table with audio equipment, a mixing console, and a laptop.

Workshop: Motion in Sound – How can dance be made audible?

mis Kollektiv

Dance can not only be seen but also heard. Motion in Sound connects dance and electronic music: sensors attached to the dancers’ bodies record movement data, such as direction, speed, and intensity, in real time and translate it into sound. This creates an immediate connection between movement and sound: dance becomes music and music becomes dance.

The young collective mis explores how dance can be experienced through different senses and made more accessible. These approaches will be presented and tested in practice during the workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to try out how movement and sound influence each other and how audio description can be used artistically. Together, they will explore how dance can be expanded so that it can be perceived not only visually but also through sound.

The workshop is open to anyone who wishes to participate, especially blind and visually impaired people.

Elements of artistic audio description are integrated into the concept, but only parts of the workshop will be accompanied by audio description. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact Luyu Zou in advance.

The mis collective consists of Lenni Ferling, Maite Herborn, and Clara Polifke. They study Scenic Arts as well as Cultural Studies and Artistic Practice at the University of Hildesheim. Motion in Sound is their first collaborative interdisciplinary project. Their collaboration is characterised by a non-hierarchical, collective approach that integrates different areas of expertise from the fields of dance, music, aesthetics of access, and technology on an equal footing. Together, they explore aesthetic and performative possibilities at the intersection of movement and sound, asking how dance can become more accessible.
